A recent investigation by the Office of Fair Trading found that 40 per cent of the 31,000 firms offering car servicing and repairs in the UK provided a poor service.

Consumer Affairs Minister, Melanie Johnson, said: "...the industry must do something about the thousands of complaints from dissatisfied customers." She added that people needed to know that their cars were being repaired or serviced by experts they could trust. She said: "At present, consumers do not have confidence in the car repair industry."

Maintenance and repair costs increased during the first half of the year by 6.4 per cent - 4.3 per cent higher than inflation.Rising labour charges are partly to blame. The [Castrol] survey warns that increasingly sophisticated technology will push costs still higher in future.
Most [mechanics] money is made on servicing...Servicing your car at a franchised dealer is more than a third more expensive than having your car repaired at an independent dealer.
