Nissan's Leaf blows into Life.
If production of the electric Nissan Leaf was to start in Sunderland, the company was banking on a large Government grant to ensure the financial state of the endeavour.
Happily, our new coalition Government has decided to honour the £20M grant and David Cameron himself stated the money would be paid.
The Leaf is scheduled to start production in 2013 and will change the area in which it is made quite drastically. New jobs and opportunities will arise, so it is no surprise that this announcement has come with a sigh of relief.
Mr Cameron said: “I can now confirm, with respect to the specific grant for Nissan that she raised last week, that the investment will be going in.”
Ms Phillipson stated: “The grant was absolutely vital to making sure that the new car is built at Sunderland.
“It is vital for the North- East economy and for the North-East to lead the way in developing new technologies.”
Car finance is a hot topic at the moment, and with the Government wanting to reduce the economy’s deficit, it is perhaps slightly surprising that the grant has gone through. Neither the less, it seems the electric Leaf will be springing into life in the not too distant future.
